Have you ever been so focused on a thing you lost sight of everything around you? If so, what were you focused on? If we look at the account of Peter, a disciple of Jesus, walking on water in Matthew 14:22-33, we see his eyes set on Jesus as he exits the boat and takes his first steps. But after the realization of mission accomplished “I am actually walking on water!”, Peter shifts his gaze from Jesus and immediately he begins to sink. Are we like that? We focus on Jesus initially until we feel we “Got this” and then we expand our focus, taking in our surroundings, accomplishments, challenges, next steps, thus lessening our view of Jesus. When that happens, just like Peter, we begin to drown, get overwhelmed, confused on direction and/or purpose…
What can we learn from Peter’s experience? Keep our eyes on Jesus! Let Him have center stage in your mind’s eye and leave the things of this world to the peripheral. If we do this, the wind, rain, ups and downs of life, which will come, can’t distract us from Jesus’ call of “Come”. He will lead us to the extraordinary- the promise of life “more abundantly” but we need to keep our eyes on Him. Yes, I know, firsthand that sometimes this is easier said than done. That is where the Word comes in. The Word of God is packed with knowledge to combat the enemy’s attempt to distract us. We need to do our part by seeking God’s Word regularly. Let it become the compass to navigate life and our eyes will stay fixed on Jesus.
